Over the years, women comprise more than half of the American workforce. Nevertheless, women still occupy a significantly smaller proportion of managerial positions than men in various sectors.

With constant headlines about inequality, wage inequality and the lack of women on boards, women in business still have challenges ahead.

I’ve been running my PR agency, Boomerang, for four years, and it certainly hasn’t been easy. Seven day weeks 12 hour days is tough, but being a woman isn’t even part of it, in my opinion.

There were rare instances where I suddenly recognized my gender. For example, on one occasion, a potential client asked questions indicating whether she intended to have children; I assume my answer would have dictated his decision to hire me.

And then there’s the puzzled look when you tell some men you’re the CEO, or the misogynist comments, patronizing remarks, and not being treated as equals in meetings.

But despite the strange experience, I don’t think being a woman has slowed me down or affected my chances of success. Being a successful businesswoman depends on your personality. I’ve always been very independent, confident and determined to be successful. And every time I meet other women entrepreneurs, they share similar qualities.

With that in mind, if you are a woman (or even a man) looking to start your own business, read through the following ten key traits that I believe make a successful entrepreneur.

Confidence

Look at a slightly successful business woman, and you will see how much she believes in herself. Confidence is probably the essential quality that every successful entrepreneur possesses. If you don’t reflect you can succeed, you won’t get very far.

In the arguments of Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, “If you think you can, you can. And if you reason you can’t, you’re right. She was a woman who continued to build her business just a month after her husband’s death.

Ambition

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg recently urged women to have the courage to be as ambitious as men. While it gives me goosebumps because every woman I’ve ever met is ambitious, it’s a trait that successful men and women possess.

You have to want something if you’re going to be successful. And it would help if you never settled for second best. Always strive to keep going. Always strive for the highest. What’s stopping you?

The Passion

Successful female entrepreneurs are continually passionate about what they do as they tend to build businesses around what they love.

Oprah Winfrey had a difficult childhood and then built a career around her passion for helping others. Anita Roddick was passionate about environmental and community activism and her business, The Body Shop, was the first to ban the use of products verified on animals.

Find your passion, believe in it, and go into something you can be genuinely proud  As Anita Roddick once said, “To be successful, you have to believe in something passionately enough to make it happen.”

Humility And Willingness To Learn.

As an entrepreneur, you cannot rest on your laurels. The creative industry constantly changes, so you need to stay current and continuously innovate. Successful female entrepreneurs see this and will continuously learn and improve. You will read books, attend workshops and be willing to learn from others.
