With constant headlines about inequality, wage inequality and the lack of women on boards, women in business still have challenges ahead.
I’ve been running my PR agency, Boomerang, for four years, and it certainly hasn’t been easy. Seven day weeks 12 hour days is tough, but being a woman isn’t even part of it, in my opinion.
There were rare instances where I suddenly recognized my gender. For example, on one occasion, a potential client asked questions indicating whether she intended to have children; I assume my answer would have dictated his decision to hire me.
And then there’s the puzzled look when you tell some men you’re the CEO, or the misogynist comments, patronizing remarks, and not being treated as equals in meetings.
But despite the strange experience, I don’t think being a woman has slowed me down or affected my chances of success. Being a successful businesswoman depends on your personality. I’ve always been very independent, confident and determined to be successful. And every time I meet other women entrepreneurs, they share similar qualities.
With that in mind, if you are a woman (or even a man) looking to start your own business, read through the following ten key traits that I believe make a successful entrepreneur.
Look at a slightly successful business woman, and you will see how much she believes in herself. Confidence is probably the essential quality that every successful entrepreneur possesses. If you don’t reflect you can succeed, you won’t get very far.
